Epoxy Flooring is Much More Affordable Than You Think!

One of the most frequent questions we get from potential clients is “Is epoxy flooring cost-effective?” With cost being such an important factor in any business or home improvement project, we’re looking at why epoxy flooring is more cost-effective than alternatives like tile, and why it is a better product overall.

Why epoxy flooring is more cost-effective than tile

In the epoxy floor vs. tile debate, there are several factors to consider.

  • Product cost – Epoxy products run from about $3 per square foot, although we would not recommend these potentially low-quality and DIY products. Top of the range epoxy, like the product we use, is about $12 per square foot. Ceramic and porcelain tiles by comparison are between $7 to $15 per square foot for a basic tile. However, you also need to include the price of the products you need to install the tile, which include adhesive, grout, tile spacers, and sealant, which adds around $1-2 per square foot.

  • Installation costs – This is where the biggest cost really lies. To install a tile floor, it will cost $5-7 per square foot, while epoxy floors cost $1 or LESS per square foot.

This means that a tile floor will cost you $8-$17 in total costs on the very low end, while a professionally installed epoxy floor will cost you around $13 or less per square foot for a higher quality end product.

  • Maintenance and durability – If you are looking at epoxy vs. tile floors, chances are you are thinking of installing it in a high-traffic area like a basement, garage, or workshop. These are areas where spills can occur, where heavy items like cars and equipment are stored, and where heavy items can easily fall and do damage.

Although tile floors are durable and easy to clean, they can chip or crack when a heavy item is dropped, or if they are regularly under pressure from a heavy vehicle. The grouting can also stain easily, be affected by moisture and mold, and can crack when a heavy tool is dropped on it. This means tiling does have some potentially significant maintenance costs, including repairing and replacing tiles (which is expensive), and heavy-duty cleaning requirements.

On the other hand, epoxy flooring is not only almost maintenance-free, but also simple to clean and friendly to heavy equipment, chemical spills, and stains. The slight flexibility in the flooring means that equipment and items are less likely to be damaged if dropped and that the floor handles pressure from heavy vehicles easily without any damage. It’s moisture proof and stain resistant, allowing you to clean it easily with warm water or a mild dishwashing liquid solution. It doesn’t crack easily, can handle extreme temperature changes, and lasts decades under simple care. This means that the long-term maintenance and lifespan of this product is exceptionally simple and cost-effective compared to tiles.

What’s more, this type of  flooring is available in a wide range of epoxy colors and finishes, making it just as versatile as tile flooring.
